No. The Coop is open to everybody, but only Coop members receive
member pricing and potential rebates.
The Coop (The Harvard/MIT Cooperative Society) was founded in 1882 by
a group of students, as a cooperative which would provide the academic
and professional community with a place to buy merchandise at competitive
prices and that would also distribute the store-earned profits among its
members.
Coop members are issued a Coop Membership number that members should use whenever making
a purchase in Coop stores, or from the on-line and off-line catalogs. Provided the purchaser
gives their Coop number at the time of purchase, these sales will be accumulated under the member's
account and eligible for rebate at year-end.
You may pay with cash, check, travelers check, Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
Crimson Cash is accepted at all the Harvard store locations and Tech Cash is
accepted at all MIT Coop store locations. No matter how you pay, the purchase
will be recorded to your Coop number. Just tell us your Coop number anytime you
make a purchase.
Students, faculty, alumni and employees of MIT, Harvard, Radcliffe,
Wheelock, Mass College of Pharmacy and the personnel of the hospitals
affiliated with the Harvard Medical School are eligible for membership
at the cost of $1.00 per year. For more information, contact Membership Services at
617-499-2082 between 9:00am-5:00pm EST, Monday - Friday or email
info@thecoop.com
The Coop fiscal follows the academic year, ending in June. At the end of the
year, financial results are determined and any profits derived from business
done with members is returned to members in proportion to their individual
purchases. The rate is set each year by the Board of Directors.
- Annual rebate : (Patronage rebates in recent years have been in the range of 7.0% -7.5% of purchases).
- Credit Card Available for students and alumni (Coop VISA card)
- Special pricing for Members only. (15% discount for students on Insignia clothing, 10% discount for online purchases)
- Members only sale events and special offers.
Apply online or visit one of our stores
to pick up an application.
Members are not allowed in any way to transfer their privilege or to make purchases
on their account in the interest of others. The misuse of a Coop number will mean the cancellation of their
membership.
Contact Member Service to get your number or you can bring your receipts to Member Services at the Harvard
location or send copies of the receipts to Member Services.

Students started the Coop (Harvard Cooperative Society) back in 1882 and students still come first with us.
The Coop was founded by a group of Harvard students and established as a cooperative.
In the beginning, the Coop was simply a place to buy books, school supplies and coal and
wood for those cold Cambridge winters. In 1916, when MIT moved from Boston
to Cambridge, The Coop was invited, by a committee of the Technology Alumni
Council and joined by the then president of the Institute, Dr. R. C. Maclaurin,
to establish a branch store at MIT (The Technology Store), and has been on the MIT
campus ever since. The Coop has grown into one of America’s largest college
bookstores; stocked with almost everything you’ll need on or off campus.
Best of all, the annual membership fee is still only $1, as it was in 1882.
The Coop's Mission is to serve the Harvard and MIT communities as
a cooperative by providing quality products and services. Our operations
should be profitable, enabling us to share a portion of those profits with our
members in the form of a rebate, and to support a capital
budget which will ensure our viability.
